9.30 – 10.30 : Anatomy and Physiology of Pain Medicine, Dr Toby Jacobs, ST7

- Anatomical organisation of pain and sensory pathways from periphery to CNS including: afferent nociceptive pathways, dorsal horn, peripheral & central mechanisms, neuromodulatory systems, supraspinal systmes, visceral pain, neuropathic pain, the influence of therapy on nociceptive mechanisms

10.30-11.00: Coffee

11.00-12.15: Drugs and Pharmacology in Pain Medicine. Dr Junayed Ahmed, Clinical Fellow

- Including Opioids, NSAIDS, Coxibs, Local Anaesthetic and drugs used for neuropathic pain

12.15 – 13.15: Lunch

13.15 – 14.15: Acute Pain, Dr Katie Howells, Advanced Pain Trainee

- Including organisation and objectives of an Acute Pain Service, Methods of assessing pain, relationship between acute and chronic pain, principles of neural blockade for acute pain management

14.15 – 14.45: Case studys/MCQ

14.45 – 15.15: Tea

15.15 – 16.15: Chronic Pain, Dr Sarah Love-Jones, Consultant in Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine

- Chronic Pain in adults – an overview, importance of biopsychosocial aspects in pain medicine, limitations of pain medicine
